Best frequent flyer program for points: Aussies are using this simple travel hack to fly for less cash in 2026

Aussies are finding a way to travel for less cash in 2026, and it’s got nothing to do with chasing the cheapest fares.

Rather, it’s about points.

Savvy travellers are being more selective about where they earn and how they redeem, with Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer proving to be one of the most popular programs.

With over two million new members, travellers can get up to 56 per cent more value from their points on domestic flights with Velocity compared to other programs.

That means everyday spending and use of Velocity credit cards can turn into more trips — not just a growing points balance.

The entry point is lower than expected too, with Reward Seats starting from just 5,900 points one-way.

So whether it’s a weekend in Byron, Melbourne or the Sunshine Coast, those everyday purchases could be what gets you there.

Those familiar with the points system knows that the catch is usually availability.

But there’s a wide range of Reward Seats across future Virgin Australia domestic flights — 80 per cent, to be exact — giving members a much better chance of locking in the seat they’re after.

And it doesn’t stop at weekend getaways and domestic fares.

Through partnerships with airlines like Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, ANA and United Airlines, points can be used on flights to more than 600 destinations worldwide.

So whether you’re planning a big overseas trip in 2026 or 2027, those points can go further than expected, not just earning along the way, but actually getting you there.

When it comes to making your points go further, the real “hack” isn’t flying more — it’s earning more on the ground too.

With partners including Flybuys, Myer and 7-Eleven, points can build quickly through everyday spending, from groceries to retail and beyond.

From the weekly food shop to filling up the tank, millions of Aussies are leaning into the program.

And redemptions are hitting record highs, with cost-savvy travellers stretching their points further than ever before.

While the main focus is often on points, don’t forget about Status Credits too.

Eligible through flying (and food shops at Coles) the more credits you gain, the higher your tier. Meaning lounge access, priority boarding, seat selection and even higher point earning.
