Kmart has announced it is trialling an entirely new store concept dedicated solely to home and living, and it could change the way Australians shop for furniture and styling on a budget.
Called K home, the first location will open on June 18 in Box Hill South, Victoria, transforming the familiar Kmart treasure hunt into a fully immersive interiors experience.

This is not a bigger homewares aisle. It is a 3,800 square metre standalone store focused entirely on furniture, storage, home styling and everyday living essentials, with 3,100 square metres dedicated to customer shopping space.
Most notably, the trial store will bring selected online-only products into a physical retail setting for the first time, allowing customers to actually see, touch and test furniture pieces before buying.
For anyone who has spent 45 minutes scrolling through online product oblivion while wondering whether a lounge is really cream or more of a “greige”, this is your moment to take charge and see the item in real life.
Unlike a traditional Kmart layout, K home has been designed around room-set displays and curated living spaces intended to inspire shoppers as they browse.
We’re talking styled lounges, organised storage solutions and furniture collections grouped together in a way that looks like walking through a modern styled apartment instead of pushing a trolley through packed aisles searching for unstained tea towels.

As cost-of-living pressure continues to shape spending habits, Australians are investing more carefully in their homes rather than taking on expensive renovations or major upgrades.
Smaller styling purchases, clever storage solutions and affordable furniture have become the new category, especially for renters and young families trying to make their spaces feel like a home without draining their first month’s rent.
Kmart Group Chief Commercial Officer Callum Smith said the new format was designed to help customers engage with the retailer’s expanding home range in a more intuitive and inspiring way.

“K home at Box Hill South gives us the opportunity to bring more of our home range into store and better understand how customers want to shop it,” Smith said.
“The space has been designed differently from a traditional Kmart store, with a more immersive home environment, curated displays and room-based inspiration to help customers explore the range in a more intuitive way.”
In recent years, Kmart’s affordable furniture and styling collections have become a cultural phenomenon, with products regularly selling out after going viral online — you know the videos.
The Box Hill South trial appears to acknowledge that Australians are no longer casually browsing the home section while picking up laundry detergent.

Many are specifically visiting Kmart for home inspiration, furniture and styling ideas.
“At a time when value matters more than ever, this trial is about helping Australian families create a home they love at a price they can afford,” Smith added.
Whether K home becomes a permanent fixture across Australia remains to be seen, but the concept taps directly into the current obsession with creating aesthetically pleasing spaces on realistic budgets.

In the era of “homebody culture”, Sunday reset videos and social media shelf styling, Kmart is betting that affordable interiors are no longer a side category.
